Presentation

The Seventh IIR Conference on Phase Change Materials and Slurries for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning will be organised from the 13 th to 15 th of September 2006 by the POLE CRISTAL, a technology centre in refrigeration under the support of the International Institute of Refrigeration in the town of Dinan, which is located in Brittany, the north-western region of France.

General themes: Phase Change Materials and Slurries for refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump applications.

Objectives

The Sixth IIR Workshop on Ice Slurries and the IIR-co-sponsored Conference on Phase Change Materials and Slurries (PCM 2005) were successfully held in Yverdon-les-bains (Switzerland) in June 2005. This joint event has led to the extension of the scope of the Working party which deals now with phase change materials and slurries for refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump applications. This "new" Phase Change Materials and Slurries Conference will take place in Dinan from the 13th to 15th of September, 2006.

This conference will provide the opportunity to present the latest advances in research and industrial applications of the phase change materials and slurries and to exchange information among international experts in this field. During this event, a technical session will be organized to present several industrial achievements with end-users’ experience.

Proposed scientific topics

THEME 1   Thermophysical properties of PCMs and Slurries: measurements and
                   identification.
THEME 2   Transport phenomena of Phase Change Materials and Slurries:
                   mass, momentum and heat transfer.
THEME 3   Time dependent behaviour of PCMs and Slurries.
THEME 4   Processing of PCMs and Slurries.

THEME 5    Industrial applications and economic assessments.

 Phase Change Material and Slurry

The addition of solid PCM micro capsules (e.g. naphthalene) to a liquid results in a liquid mixture named « PCMS » that can be pumped.

PCM technology leads to a significant reduction of energy consumption in storage and transport. It makes use of the phase change properties of a material at a constant temperature. Indeed, phase change from liquid to solid leads to a significant energy release, whereas a phase change from the solid to the liquid leads to significant energy absorption.

PCM research aims at mastering every aspect of these processes.

Ice Slurries

Ice Slurries are Non-Newtonian fluids with very high energy densities originating from their melting enthalpies.

The phase change also leads to good heat transfer properties and a homogenisation of the temperature field. These substances are advantageous high-energy transport fluids, which suit a large number of technical applications, e.g. in refrigeration technology, process techniques and air-conditioning.
